The office of Continuing Professional Development at the USC School of Pharmacy provides pharmacists with continuing education programs and skills needed to provide excellent patient care. Our programs are tailored to the lifelong learning and advanced practice needs of alumni, preceptors, and other supporters (voluntary faculty, QSAD members).
We offer live and online training opportunities with active learning methods including workshops, roundtable discussions, and case studies.
Upcoming Programs
The Psychiatry for Population Health Pharmacists in partnership with the California Rights Med Collaborative will be held virtually. The session aims to advance the skills of pharmacists practicing in community pharmacies, clinics, and other outpatient settings in providing mental health medication management and/or identifying additional services needed by their patients, supporting a "whole person care" approach to managing patients' physical and mental health conditions. Fulfills the certification requirement for advanced pharmacist practice licensure
The USC School of Pharmacy Comprehensive Medication Management (CMM)-based advanced practice pharmacist certification program prepares participants to identify, stratify, evaluate, and manage high-risk patients with poorly-controlled chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, asthma/COPD, and upper respiratory infection. This educational session provides participants with the tools necessary to implement institutional policy in compliance with Senate Bill 311, "Compassionate Access to Medical Cannabis Act or Ryan's Law" in health care facilities.

Opioid overdose has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Pharmacists are called upon to recognize prescription and illicit opioid abuse and recommend treatment. Pharmacists are also called upon to recommend optimal pain management that includes appropriate use of opioids and other interventions. Pharmacists can play an essential role in decreasing the deaths related to opioid overdose. According to AB-1535, effective April 10, 2015, pharmacists can furnish, without a prescription, naloxone kits to reverse opioid overdose. Pharmacists dispensing this potentially life-saving medication must complete one-hour of continuing education on the use of naloxone. 5 hours of continuing education credit
This online course is designed to provide instruction on the assessment and treatment of depression including suicide risk. Instruction on the mental status examination is provided along with guidance on when to refer patients for further evaluation. A comprehensive review of treatment options including psychotherapeutic and complementary treatments is presented. 2.5 hours of continuing education credit
This online course was developed in response to California Assembly Bill 1114 that allows pharmacists to bill Medi-Cal for furnishing hormonal contraception and providing counseling on safe and effective contraception as authorized in Section 4052.9 of the Business and Professions Code. This course provides pharmacists with the knowledge and skills needed to function as a reimbursable provider of self-administered hormonal contraception. For more information, click here.
2.5 hours of continuing education credit
This program has been designed to prepare pharmacists to serve as reimbursable providers of nicotine replacement therapy and counseling to facilitate smoking cessation. The course begins with a review of the latest CDC guidelines and CA Board of Pharmacy AB1114 legislation. Dr. Rory Kim guides participants through case-based modules to apply non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments for smoking cessation. For more information, click here.

This program has been designed to assist pharmacists in expanding their knowledge and skills related to improving care provided to patients traveling internationally. The pharmacist is in a unique position to help patients traveling abroad to fully prepare them by recommending appropriate immunizations, medications, and over the counter products, as well as to provide them with travel advice. This online course is designed by our experts in pharmacogenomics to assist pharmacists in providing the latest information in the field of research that studies how genes affect a person's response to drugs. Pharmacists are distinctly suited to meet the need for patient counseling and interpretation of pharmacogenomic results because of their unique training and strategic placement in the community setting.
